Without You

Hello, everyone, welcome to the PEN Music Special. We call this show A Journey Through Time, because we play songs from many different eras. We’ll play from the oldest music to the newest songs. This show is dedicated to all those listeners out there who wrote to us about the problems they’ve had. Many listeners told us how they lost their loved ones, and many countless others told us tragic stories about things that happened to their children, their parents, their husbands, or their wives and sometimes even their best friends. Many of these stories are heart breaking and often touching. This show is for you. I want to thank all the listeners out there who wrote to us. Thank you for sharing your happiness, and your sadness. I’ve learned a lot and grown a lot from reading these letters.

That song you just heard is called Hazard. The song, by Richard Marx, tells a sad story about a boy who lived in Nebraska. Nebraska is one of the fifty states in the United States. This boy’s life is filled with sadness and despair. This boy lost his mother when he was only seven years old. After his mother passed away, the people in town thought something was wrong with the boy, because he grew up alone. They looked at him with prejudiced(有成见的;偏颇的) eyes. Prejudice. Prejudice means an opinion formed without any knowledge or fair judgment(判断). It is an unreasonable(不合理的, 不切实际的) opinion. Three years ago he met a woman named Mary. When Mary saw this boy she looked through all the rumors(谣言) and the lies and she saw the man inside. The boy and Mary became very close very quickly. They used to walk down by the river and she loved to watch the sun go down. Unfortunately(不幸地), one day Mary disappeared(消失; 失踪). And so feeling bad for the boy because he lost another one of his loved ones. The people in town accused(控告, 谴责, 非难)him of being responsible(有责任的; 应负责任的) for her disappearance. At this point(此时), he became very upset(心烦的,苦恼的) and found that he must leave this old Nebraska town. Here is the lyric(歌词) to Hazard by Richard Marx

My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven
Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes
That boy's not right
Three years ago when I came to know Mary
First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies
And saw the man inside
We used to walk down by the river
She loved to watch the sun go down
We used to walk along the river
And dream our way out of this town
No one understood what I felt for Mary
No one cared until the night she went out walking alone
And never came home
Man with a badge came knocking next morning
Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly
Pointed right at me
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town
I think about my life gone by
How it's done me wrong
There's no escape for me this time
All of my rescues are gone, long gone
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town

I really like the lyrics to that song. It is so sad, but yet beautifully written. One thing this song makes you realize that life isn’t always fair. Some of us are tall and some of us are short. Some of us are smart and some of us are not so smart. Some of us are rich and some of us are poor. Life isn’t fair, but we need to live with it and continue on with our lives. If any of you listeners out there have a story you would like to share with us, please write to us. If you have any problems we’ll do our best to help you solve them. But remember if you think you have a sad tale or you think you have a sad story, there are hundreds, thousands, if not millions of people out there with an even sadder story than yours. Life isn’t fair, but we have to live on.

After anything of significance(意义, 重要性)happens to us or people we know, we often wonder about the future. What does our future hold? Many of us don’t realize that we know this world. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but we know that tomorrow will always come. This is the world we know. This is The World I Know.

World I Know by Collective Soul
Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on.
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why.
Don't know why.

Are we listening?
Hymns of offering.
Have we eyes to see?
Love is gathering.
All the words that I've been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
Into one.
Into one.

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
Ooooh it's the world I know.

I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why.
Don't know why.

So I walk up on high And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
Ooooh it's the world I know.

The song, The World I Know by Collective Soul tells us that if something bad happens to us, you’ll all turn out okay, because we know this world, and this world will always protect us. Some of us didn’t lose the ones we loved, but sometimes maybe we just lost that loving feeling. Yet when we fall in love, there is nothing else like in the world. When you fall in love, you feel like you can’t live without the person you love being next to you all the time. So here is Without You by Mariah Carrey.

Without You by Mariah Carrey
No I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way
The story goes
You always smile but in your eyes
Your sorrow shows
Yes it shows
No I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there
But then I let you go
And now it’s only fair
That I should let you know
What you should know

I can’t live
If living is without you
I can’t live
I can’t give anymore
I can’t live
If living is without you
I can’t give
I can’t give anymore

Well I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way
The story goes
You always smile but in your eyes
Your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

I can’t live
If living is without you
I can’t live
I can’t give any more
I can’t live
If living is without you
I can’t give
I can’t give anymore

It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. That is an old American saying. And I happen to agree with that saying one hundred percent. And we also have to realize that we must live on. Because there are so many other people who love and care about us, our parents, our children, our husbands and our wives, and even our friends. There are also those odd times when we feel like you can’t live with or without the ones you loved. You are unhappy or upset when you are together, and you feel lonely without them. And here is U2 with With or Without you.

With or Without You by U2
See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you
With or without you
With or without you
Through the storm, we reach the shore
You gave it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live with or without you
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away
My hands are tied, my body bruised
She’s got me with nothing to win
And nothing left to lose
And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give, and you give
And you give yourself away
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

Love is strange. There’s nothing else like it. And today’s show is dedicated(专注的,献身的,) to all of our listeners out there. So, walk outside with your head up and your chin(颏, 下巴) high, because tomorrow will always come. Through these songs, we are trying to tell you that people do care, and we care. I believe that’s all the time we have for today. Before I leave, I would like to leave you with a live version of Hazard by Richard Marx. I’ll see you next time.
